ビートルズと非常に近しく、アップル・ブティックの外壁を塗りたくった事で著名なThe foolは、ポールのFool on the hillから取られたそうですけど、本来はビジュアル集団ではありますが（詳しくは今売りのpenを参照の事）、中心人物のSimon Posthumaが音楽もやってるので・・・なのかどうか、パートナーのMarijke Kogerと、あと二人のメンバーを揃え、男女二人ずつから構成される音楽ユニットとしてのThe foolをしてアルバムを製作したのだそうな。 それがこれ。
全編これでもかっ！ってくらいのサイケデリックでありまして、編集しまくった異様な（しかしアッパー）な世界観が提示されております。 音楽的傾向としてはトラッドフォークを中心としており、果たして退屈になってしまいそうなところではありますが、先に申しましたとおり編集が大変な事になっており（明らかにテープを切りましたっていう体のブレイクとか）、序盤では電子音が行き交い、聴くのが面倒になってしまうほど。 ただ、その編集の具合も・・・逸脱はしているですけど・・・聴きづらい事はなく・・・そんなには聴きづらいことはなく、堂々たる珍盤っぷりです。
The foolとしてはこれ一枚限りでしたが、アップル（ビートルズのね）が崩壊した後はSimonとMarijkeの元ザヤで音楽活動はしていたらしく、作品を残しています。 その中のSon Of Americaは、The foolからサイケデリックを省いた丁度位の楽曲群でありまして、なかなかの好盤ではあります。
しかしながら売れなかったらしいですなぁ。
それにしてもこのジャケットはどうだろう。 サイケデリックアートじゃないですか。 これのLPサイズのが欲しいです。 壁に貼りたくなります。
The Fool came to London in the early ’60s from Amsterdam as designers, and were asked by NEMS’ Brian Epstein to style his clients in the new Psychedelic fashions, everything from the painted guitars and flamboyant clothes sported by Cream on their first US tour to psychedelic cars for the stars and the mural on The Apple Boutique – which also showcased their fashions. Their album sleeves for Jimi Hendrix, the Move and The Incredible String Band among others, remain classics. And, yes, they made an album! Produced by Graham Nash on the cusp of leaving the Hollies (who The Fool also did sleeves for!) and engineered by Hendrix soundmaster Eddie Kramer, the album is a shock! This is a tour de force of Wyrd Folk ala Incredible String Band and strange twisted visions of pop ala God knows who! This glorious package includes the original album (on Apple records) plus the ultra rare 45 mixes all beautifully remastered. Also features a lavishly illustrated booklet alongside in-depth notes by the author of ‘Those Were The Days’, the definitive book on Apple Records. On top of all that is a contextual essay on the amazing story of the Provos, the Dutch avant-garde group the Fool sprang from. Cherry Red. 2005.
