An amazing vocalist with an impressive five octave range, Minnie Riperton will go down in the annals of Soul music history as one of the greatest singers of the 20th Century, even though her career was cut short by cancer – she was only 31 years old when she died. Produced, arranged, and orchestrated by Charles Stepney in 1970, Riperton’s first solo album, Come to My Garden, largely went unnoticed upon it’s initial release in 1970, but has since become recognized as a masterpiece by fans and critics alike. アルバム Perfect Angel 抜きで Minnie Riperton という縛りをやってみた。 遺作となった Minnie (1979) 以外はどれもいい・・・いや Minnie だって悪くはないんだけれども・・・という結果になってしまい、3rd や 4th でディスコ路線にも片足入れている不安も、Minnie Riperton だから全然問題なし！という。 恐るべし。
ではあるんですが、私にとっての Minnie Riperton は、むしろ Perfect Angel よりもこのソロ 1 作目である Come To My Garde (1970) なんじゃないかという気がしてなりません。 この人の声というか歌に匹敵するには荘厳なオーケストラしかなかった、と、答え合わせを 1 作目でやっちゃってるんですよね。 そして最適解だったという。 多分にキーマンは Charles Stepney だったのでしょうなぁ。
